Creating a Stress-Free Back to School Experience

September can be a stressful month as children return to school. And worries about getting used to a new school or a new classroom can cause anxiety. Read on for some helpful tips on how you can help your kids beat the stress that a new school year can bring.

Relaxing in the Spa

If your child or teen is feeling tense about entering a new school or new grade, it’s time to hit the spa for some much-needed hydrotherapy. The combination of heated water and jet massage will help melt away tension. Some studies have shown that sitting in the hot tub increases the body’s relaxation response while lowering its stress response.

Have you ever wondered why children love baths and teens adore hot showers? It’s at least partly related to the heat of the water encouraging the body to produce “feel good” hormones known as endorphins and dopamine. These hormones are known to trigger feelings of calm and well-being. Time in the spa also offers that experience. So, next time your child is feeling stressed, a dip in the hot tub might do the trick, especially if you take advantage of the calming effects of aromatherapy. Just remember not to allow young children to soak in water above 98°F (37°C).

Getting in Family-Time

As summer ends, it can be more difficult to have time together as a family. That in itself can add to the stress of returning to school. There’s only one way to get outside, spend time together and de-stress all at once — and that’s with a hot tub. Scheduling regular spa time with the family is an ideal way to reconnect after dealing with the daily demands of school and work. You can simply chat about the events of the day or spice it up a bit. There are a number of fun games that can be played in the hot tub from musical jets (a new take on the classic musical chairs) to rubber duck races to more sedate games like ‘I Spy’ or ‘Who am I?’

Getting Enough Sleep

Making sure your children are getting enough sleep is crucial to them dealing well with stress. According to Health Canada, children require nine to 11 hours of sleep each night while teens need eight to 10 hours.

Children who don’t get enough sleep are more prone to stress, hyperactivity and poor mental health overall. Kids who do catch more Z’s, however, tend to be healthier both physically and emotionally.

Eating Well

Proper nutrition is also key to your children excelling at school. Studies have shown that children with a healthy diet have better memory, problem-solving skills and creative abilities. And when a child is doing well in school, he or she tends to feel less stressed. Part of having a healthy diet is staying hydrated, so ensure your child is drinking enough. This is especially important for children who take part in sports.
