How Often Should I Clean My Hot Tub?

Outdoor hot tub installation with a pool.

One of the best ways to end a long stressful day is some relaxing hydrotherapy in your backyard hot tub. A spotless hot tub filled with crystal-clear water almost always sparks joy! Proper cleaning and regular maintenance of a hot tub increases its longevity and enhances the performance, while creating a safe and enjoyable place for you and your loved ones to relax. In this article, we speak about how often you should clean your hot tub with more detailed information on when and how to do it.

The Importance of Having a Clean Hot Tub

Thinking about a hot tub as a small swimming pool is a good approach to cleaning it since most of the same basic care and maintenance tasks apply to both of them. There are 3 main steps that should be completed in every cleaning session of your hot tub.

It is easier to remember them as the “three C’s”.

  • Circulation
  • Cleaning
  • Chemistry

During or After Each Use

Most modern hot tubs come with an automatic circulation schedule to get rid of any contaminants by passing a flow of water through the filtration system. During or after each use, you should check for any floating debris or dirt that has landed at the bottom of the spa and remove it, to help take the strain off the filter and filtration system. You can do this with a skimmer and spa vacuum.

After each session, you should also add one teaspoon on chlorine sanitizer and one capful of shock to keep the water clean and clear.

Weekly

A good weekly cleaning is essential for proper maintenance of a hot tub. Start the cleaning process with rinsing off your all your hot tub accessories with water from the hose or sink, including the filters. There will always be some debris, especially when it comes to outdoor hot tubs that gather contaminants that are blown in from the wind, like leaves, dirt and insects. Use a sponge soaked with some white vinegar to wipe get rid of the scum from accessories, covers and steps. It is always easier to do this weekly before they settle in and you have to put more effort and time to scrub them off.

Testing the chemical balance of your hot tub is another weekly task that you should do. Ideally, the pH level of your water should stay around 7.2-7.6. There are test kits and hot tub chemicals out there that helps you keep the chemistry of your tub in check. Add water care products as needed and test the water again to ensure that it is properly balanced.

Monthly

Consistency is key when it comes to the proper cleaning and maintenance of a hot tub. When your daily and weekly cleaning tasks are done consistently and well, you do not need to spend a large amount of time, money and effort for the monthly cleaning. Rinse your hot tub filter with water from the hose and spray with a cleaning solution once or twice a month, depending on how frequently your spa is used. You should also clean the interior of the hot tub while inside, checking for a build-up of scum where the water line is. If you notice that the water level has decreased, fill as needed.

Quarterly

Fully drain and give a deep cleaning to your hot tub and attend to any minor repairs needed. This includes touching up any cosmetic damages to the outer surfaces and the hot tub cover as well.

Yearly

Check for any wear and tear for the hardware and the wiring of the tub. Hire a professional to do a proper inspection and a tune-up to the hot tub. Take some time to ensure that the foundation is still evenly supporting the weight of the hot tub and complete any landscaping upgrades that are required.
