Tips and Tricks to Keep Your Spa Water Clean

Keeping your spa clean doesn’t have to be difficult. Knowing the tricks of the trade can really help you streamline your routine maintenance process. In this article, we will take a closer look at some of the best tips and tricks to help keep your spa water clean.

Hot Tub Supplies

Keeping your spa water clean starts with having the right supplies on hand. You will need:

  • A Test Kit — Kits contain everything you need to test your water to determine what chemicals must be added.
  • pH Balancers — pH up is added if your water tests low and pH down is used if it tests high.
  • Stain and Scale Control — This product will keep scum and build up in check.
  • Bromine Tablets — Bromine is used to neutralize bacteria and sanitize your spa’s water.
  • Hot Tub Shock — Shock is used to remove or prevent foam and cloudiness.
  • Filter Cleaner — Used monthly to keep your filter free of dirt and grime.

These are just the basics, however. If you want to learn some easy ways to make cleaning your spa easier, read on.

1. Invest in Some Pantyhose or Stockings

Nothing makes a better net than stockings. Thanks to the fineness of the material, a pair of pantyhose or a stocking can be used to cover the lower return inlets when you change your spa’s water. This will prevent dirt and debris from floating into your filter system.

2. Keep Tennis Balls on Hand

It may seem like the lazy man’s way of cleaning your spa, but we’re all for saving our customers effort!  Tennis balls are the perfect vehicle for absorbing residue and grime.

Drop a few balls in your spa’s skimmer or even directly into your hot tub’s water. The fuzz of the balls will literally suck up residue from lotions and cosmetics that slide off your body into the spa. If you use your hot tub frequently, changing the balls out often can save you a lot of cleaning time, not to mention you’ll need fewer spa chemicals.

3. Shower Before You Soak

Prevent dirt, debris and other contaminants from entering your spa in the first place. Have all who wish to enter the hot tub take a quick shower before they enter the water. This can help to remove oil and dirt from the skin, shampoo and conditioner from hair, and even laundry detergent from bathing suits. All of these contaminants can affect the clarity of the water in your spa.

4. Keep Hats on Hand

You may be scratching your head wondering how a hat can keep your spa clean. While hats can’t be used as cleaning agents, they can prevent a nasty problem: Hair in your hot tub water. While you may think putting long locks up in a ponytail or bun is enough, hair can still make its way into your spa when it’s not covered. By tucking long hair up under a baseball cap or any other hat of choice, you can keep hair (and the residue from your shampoo and other products) out of the water. By keeping these tips in mind, you can make spa ownership — and maintenance — a breeze.
